About Lindsay Westra

Lindsay Feldmeth Westra has attracted international attention for her “gleaming, beautiful, powerful voice” and her passion for singing “with exuberance and impeccable musicality.”

Born in Hollywood, California, she moved to Austria as an undergraduate so that she could study opera with Horiana Branisteanu at the Mozarteum. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in opera at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and then completed her training with Mirella Freni at CUBEC in Italy and with Ruth Falcon in New York City. She has also had the privilege of working with Montserrat Caballé, Jeannine Altmeyer, Sergio Bertocchi, Hartmut Höll, Armen Guzelimian and Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf in masterclasses.

She first trained as a coloratura soprano, making her operatic debut as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute in the Karl-Böhm-Saal of the Salzburger Festspielhaus at the age of 23. After shining in several coloratura roles, her voice grew in size and color, developing into a more dramatic repertoire. Her powerful sound is now best suited to the music of Wagner, Verdi, and Richard Strauss.

She has been featured as a soloist with the Claremont Symphony, the Pasadena Community Orchestra and the Mozarteum University Symphony Orchestra. With the Japanese pianist, Ayako Watanabe, she has given art song recitals from Vienna to Tokyo. She has performed at concerts and worship services throughout the U.S., the U.K., Austria, Botswana, Germany, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain and Switzerland.

Her enthusiasm for opera is contagious and her witty "introductions to opera" made her a favorite with tour groups in Italy, where she performed more than 100 solo recitals for the music society Concerto Classico. She speaks four languages and her articles about opera have appeared in periodicals such as German World Magazine. She has been featured on radio and television for Times FM Nepal and Voice of Russia and Kantipur TV, and in the Metropolitan Opera film documentary, “The Audition.”

Devoted to promoting the “unheard voices” of underprivileged musicians, she won a Davis Project for Peace prize in 2009. She has organized two global opera festivals, the Kathmandu Music for Peace Festival in Nepal and the No. 1 Ladies’ Opera Festival in Botswana. The festivals are designed to equip and inspire musicians who do not have first-world resources. They have included master classes for emerging Tswana opera singers, scholarships for gifted Nepali musicians, support for local Christian children’s ministries, and a music therapy workshop for AIDS-affected pre-schoolers. She also teaches private lessons at the Voice Gym (www.voice-gym.com) in Artesia.

She is married to the Rev. Rick Westra, pastor of Trinity Christian Reformed Church. They live in Los Angeles with their two young children.
