Markku Luolajan-Mikkola studied cello with Arto Noras at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he received his diploma in 1983. An interest in baroque music led him to Holland, where he studied viola da gamba with Wieland Kuijken, and baroque cello with Jaap ter Linden at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and received postgraduate diplomas in both instruments. Markku has earned distinction as a recital soloist and chamber musician. He is a founder member of celebrated Phantasm viol quartet and several other European ensembles. His engagements include regular appearances in USA, UK and other European countries. inthe year 2003 he has given concerts in England, France, The Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Russia, South-Korea, Japan and naturally in Finland. Markku has worked together with many outstanding musicians such as Wieland Kuijken, Sarah Cunningham, Laurence Dreyfus, Jaap Schröder, Barbara Bonney and Ian Partridge. His interest to contemporary music has led him co-operation with appreciated Finnish composers such as Eero Hämeenniemi and Jukka Tiensuu. His solo and chamber music recordings have received enthusiastic critical acclaim, and are available on Alba, BIS, Simax, Channel Classics, Decca and GMN labels. Recordings have been three times nominated to a Gramophone Award, which was given to Henry Purcell Fantasies in 1997 and Orlando Gibbons Consort for viols in 2004CDs played by Phantasm. Recordings have also been noted as Editor¹s Choice (Gramophone), Recording of the Month (Rondo) and Best Recordings of the Year (Helsingin Sanomat). In 2003 Phantasm recordings have been marked of Diapason d'or and Choc du Monde honours. Markku Luolajan-Mikkola is a well known teacher in Finland and he is teaching at the Sibelius Academy.
