Once upon a time, when Slavic tribes were not yet Christians, there was a mighty god of thunder - Perun. He lived in Pirin mountain with his beautiful young wife, Perunika. To celebrate her stunning loveliness, the Slavs named after her the enigmatic iris - perunika... Award-winning London-based PERUNIKA TRIO was founded by artistic director Eugenia Georgieva. Incorporating Bulgarian, Macedonian and Russian traditional music and Orthodox chants into a broader Slavic repertoire, their a’ capella performances include poetry and storytelling.The three singers of Perunika share a love of the dramatic beauty of Bulgarian folk music, where pagan past, Church Slavonic tradition and five centuries of Ottoman rule fuse, leading you to an exciting journey into Slavic spirituality... The group won the third prize in Folk Song Group category at the prestigious Llangollen Musical Eisteddfod in 2008 in Llangollen, Wales, and have gigged extensively ever since at festivals, art centres, churches, private functions and club nights. They have been regulars for 3 years running at Mayor’s Thames Festival in London (2008,09,10) and have performed at Sunrise Celebration @ The BIG CHILL 2008 and Chichester Festivities 2009, a Christmas concert 2008 in Dorgali (Sardinia) as well as International A’capella Festival - Leipzig 2010. Collaborations include work with Max Pashm Band (“Never Mind the Balkans”) and Transglobal Underground (“UNITE > Gathering of Strangers”), with whom they recorded and toured the UK in June 2010 to promote the album “A Gathering of Strangers”. A video of the song “When You Hear Me Sing” (sung by Eugenia Georgieva) was screened at Portobello Film Festival 2010. PERUNIKA’s debut album “INTRODUCING Perunika Trio” was released worldwide by independent label World Music Network, in March 2008 to critical acclaim. In April 2012 Perunika Trio released an album on SONY MUSIC Japan Intl. "Bulgarian Warabeuta" is a compilation of traditional Japanese songs - warabe uta - sung in the style of Bulgarian polyphony. The singers appeared on Japanese TV and radio, and took part in the popular annual festival "Live Image 12" in Tokyo, performing in front of 5,000 people on two consecutive nights.CONTACT: [email protected]
