About Samuel Marques


Clarinetist Samuel Marques regularly collaborates as a guest musician with Portugal’s Gulbenkian Orchestra, Remix Ensemble Casa da Música, Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra, Filarmonia das Beiras Orchestra, Sul Classical Orchestra, Centro Classical Orchestra, Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra and Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as with Germany’s Mannheimer Philharmoniker. He has performed with names such as Martha Argerich, Joyce DiDonato, Maria João Pires, Andrea Bocelli, Arcadi Volodos, Waltraud Meier, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Andrea Bocelli. Mr. Marques is on the Clarinet faculty at Jobra Music Conservatory (Branca, Portugal) and Colégio Moderno Music School (Lisbon, Portugal).

Mr. Marques began his studies at the age of five at the wind band Banda Visconde de Salreu. Afterwards, he studied with Nelson Aguiar (Aveiro Music Conservatory), António Saiote (Music and Performing Arts College – Porto), Stanley Drucker and Pascual Martínez-Forteza (New York University’s Steinhardt School). At NYU he was also an Adjunct Instructor.

Mr. Marques has been awarded in several competitions in Europe, US and South America.

Since 2013, Mr. Marques has been selected to numerous orchestra festivals, such as the National Repertory Orchestra (USA), Castleton Festival Orchestra (USA), World Peace Orchestra (USA), New York Youth Symphony (USA), Atlantic Music Festival (USA), Neue Philharmonie München (Germany), Internationale Junge Orchesterakademie (Germany), Höri Musiktage Bodensee Festival Orchestra (Germany), just to name a few.
In 2017, he was awarded with the 1st Prize at the 7th National Young Clarinetists Competition of the Portuguese Clarinet Association (Portugal), 2nd Prize at the Clarinet Competition of the 1st Algarve Clarinet Festival (Portugal) and was selected as one of the winners of the IMKA Grand Prix Concert Competition (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Mr. Marques was invited to appear at the Alexander Arutiunian International Wind Festival (Yerevan, Armenia) where he performed with the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia, in chamber music concerts and also taught a masterclass. In 2018, Mr. Marques was given the 1st Prize at the 6th International Winds Competition of Alto Minho (Portugal), the 3rd Prize at the II The North International Music Competition (Sweden) and was a soloist with Portugal’s Atlantic Coast Orchestra. He was invited to be on the jury of the 6th National Winds Competition “Sons de Cabral” (Portugal).

In 2019, Mr. Marques has taught masterclasses at Guarda Music Conservatory and Troviscal Wind Band. He was invited to collaborate with ENOA (European Network of Opera Academies) and selected to the Höri Musiktage Bodensee Festival Orchestra (Germany). He was also awarded with the 2nd Prize at the II International Competition José Massarrão (Portugal). In 2020 he was a finalist of the Silverstein Global Clarinet Contest and Italy’s Divertimento Ensemble’s #iorestoacasa #suono per te! Competition, as well as an invited teacher at the 13th Figueira da Foz International Music Festival/Portuguese National Youth Orchestra. In 2021 he was invited as a Jury member of the MOOC Cup Asian International Youth Clarinet Competition (organized by the Asian International Youth Arts Festival (Singapore)) and of the XI National Competition of Young Clarinetists (organized by APC – Portuguese Clarinet Association), having also started collaborations with Portugal’s Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra, Ensemble Darcos and Ensemble Melleo Harmonia. He was also soloist with the Aveiro University Clarinet Choir and was the winner of the Grand Prize at the 3rd International Competition José Massarrão (Portugal). Samuel regularly plays in duo with pianist Dana Radu, having performed concerts in many iconic concert halls all over Portugal.

Future projects include collaborations with the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra and Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra, solo recitals across Portugal and a CD recording (under the label PARMA Recordings) of a solo piece by composer Barbara Jazwinski with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Samuel is a Silverstein Artist.
